So, does your “goodnight” routine in any way resemble Mr. Bean’s? (click for video) I hope not! Before you venture into the world of la-la land, take a trip back to days of old and read God’s word with me. Today’s reading covers the end of Israel’s (Jacob’s) life and thusly the end of Genesis. Here are some brief notes:

Bible 365-Day 21-Evening
“♫ Feed the Birds…tuppence a bag…tuppence… tuppence…tuppence a bag.♫” (click for video…if you are reading this via email, visit the site) One of my favorite goodnight songs from Mary Poppins. And just before the sweet voice of Julie Andrews lulls you into a land of dreams and birds, let us examine the Old Testament.
Today’s reading covers Israel’s (Jacob’s) move to Egypt, his settlement in Goshen, the result of the famine and Israel’s (Jacob’s) last days. As with the last few OT readings, the vast majority of this reading is simply the recitation of historical facts and need no explanation, but here are a few notes:

Bible 365-Day 20-Evening
So long…farewell…(click to see video). Another day has escaped us and as has the Sun. Before we visit our beds, we turn back to wrap up the ancient story of Joseph.
Today covers the brothers return to Egypt, Joseph revealing himself to his brothers, the trick of the silver cup, and Joseph reuniting with his father Israel (Jacob). Once again the story pretty much speaks for itself, so my notes are brief:

Bible 365-Day 19-Evening
Sunrise...Sunset...Sunrise...Sunset...Ok, enough fiddler on the roof. Today's reading covers Joseph interpreting the cupbearer's, baker's and Pharaoh's dream, Joseph becoming second in command over all of Egypt, a brief record of Joseph's sons, Joseph's brothers journey to Egypt and Joseph holding Simeon hostage.
Bible 365-Day 19-Morning
Top ‘o the mornin’ to ya. Today’s reading covers the Pharisees Blaspheming the Holy Spirit and demanding a sign. It also covers Jesus and the brethren. Here are some notes:

Grab a soothing hot tea w/honey along with your favorite technicolored tunic and enjoy Gen 37-39. Today’s reading covers Joseph’s dream, the plot against Joseph, Judah and Tamar, Joseph’s success in Egypt and Joseph’s imprisonment. Here are some notes:

Bible 365-Day 16-Evening
As the moon chases away the sun we come back to the old old words of the not so young Testament. Today’s reading covers a very serious subject: forcible rape and the repercussions that followed. It also covers the relocation of Esau. Here are my thoughts:

Bible 365-Day 15-Evening
The sun sets and signals the end to yet another day and as such we turn our eyes to the Old Testament. Today's reading covers Jacob's secret departure from his Uncle Laban's house,Laban's pursuit of Jacob, Laban and Jacob's covenant at Mizpah, Jacob's fear of seeing his brother Esau, Jacob's "wrestling" match with the Angel of the Lord (an OT name for Christ), Jacob's reunion with Esau and finally Jacob's settlement in Shechem. Here are some notes:

Bible 365-Day 14-Evening
Today’s reading of the ancient text covers Jacob’s meeting of Rachel, his Uncle Leban’s Trickery, Jacob’s two marriages and subsequent offspring, and the prosperity of Jacob. A majority of this text is expository but I did find just a few interesting points:

Bible 365-Day 11-Evening
Today’s reading covers the death and burial of Sarah, the finding of a bride for Isaac, the choosing of Rebekah for Isaac’s bride, her subsequent marriage to Isaac, and the death of Abraham. Whilst the majority of this reading was expository there were a few interesting notes:

Bible 365-Day 9-Evening
Gen 20-22 covers Abraham's treachery (20), the birth of Isaac (21a), Sarah turning against Hagar (21b), the covenant with Abimelech (21c), and the offering of Isaac (22).
Here are some interesting notes on this section:

Bible 365-Day 8-Evening
Tonight's selection covers the promise of the birth of Isaac and the doom of Sodom. Here are some interesting notes:

Bible 365-Day 7-Evening
Gen 15-17 covers God promising Abram a son, Sarai and Hagar and the Covenant of Circumcision. Some interesting notes regarding this section:
Abram was growing more and more upset with God because he did not yet have a son. Abram could not understand how God had promised him all these descendants, and yet he was growing old and still had no son; the theme of faith is one of the major themes of not only Abram's life, but the entire Bible.

Bible 365-Day 6-Evening
Gen 12-14
This section involves Abram’s journey into Egypt, Lot’s blunder of setting up his tent in Sodom (and his subsequent capture) and the War of the Kings in chapter 14. Some interesting notes on this evening’s reading:
God told Abram, a rich and powerful man, to leave his hometown and his relatives and follow Him. Abram, without question, did so.

Bible 365-Day 5-Evening
This section of Genesis covers life after the flood, several genealogies, and the Tower of Babel. Some interesting notes:
Jan 4, 2010
Bible 365-Day 4-Evening
Gen 7-9:17
This section covers the flood, the end of the flood and the rainbow covenant. Some interesting notes on this section:
Noah was 600 years old when the flood occurred; according to the time frame laid out in this section, Noah was on the Ark just under a year. The Bible also makes it clear that every living thing not on the ark died, including plants, animals and people. The water rose well above the highest mountain.
It is also believed by JM that this is the end of the canopy of water that protected man from the UV rays of the sun, and the beginning of the weather cycle we know today (which includes rain, thunderstorms, etc…)
In Gen 9, God promises never to flood the earth again as He did in Noah’s day. It is implied from the text that He is referring to a global flood, not localized flooding.

Bible 365-Day 2-Evening
In Gen. Ch 4, we see the very first recorded murder in history with Cain killing Abel. What is interesting to note is the events that lead up to the murder. Cain and Abel both bring an offering to God; God has regard for Abel's offering but none for Cain's. It is clear from the text in verse 6 that at some point God had given Cain and Abel specific instructions about offerings and that Abel refused to obey those instructions. In verse 7 God warns Cain about the peril of sin and Cain obviously doesn't heed the warning, since in verse 8 he murders Abel and is therefore banished from Eden; Cain settles in Nod, a land ease of Eden.

Bible 365-Day 1-Evening
-Evening-
Genesis 1-3
Wow, entire books and debates have been written on these three chapters. Gen 1 documents the creation of the world, 2 talks about the creation of man and 3 documents the tragic fall of mankind.
JM (here and forever more in this series will stand for John McArthur) notes that the Hebrew use of the word Day in Gen 1 leaves no doubt that it was a twenty-four hour period, not an age. He gathers this because anytime a numerical value was used in conjunction with the word "Day" in Hebrew always meant a twenty-four hour period; Exodus, the next book, establishes the order of the "week" (Ex 20:8-11) which is further evidence that Gen 1 is speaking of a literal seven day week. JM also notes that the phrase "after their kind" is used when talking about reproduction; a creation theory that features cross-species' propagation and mutation is inconsistent with Scripture (ie... theistic evolution)
