Gen 12-14
This section involves Abram’s journey into Egypt, Lot’s blunder of setting up his tent in Sodom (and his subsequent capture) and the War of the Kings in chapter 14. Some interesting notes on this evening’s reading:
God told Abram, a rich and powerful man, to leave his hometown and his relatives and follow Him. Abram, without question, did so.
When Abram told his wife to lie about being his sister, it was actually a half-truth (which is still a lie) since Sarai was his half-sister.
It is also interesting to note that when God plagued the house of the Pharaoh, it is not clear how the plagues also revealed Abram’s deception; furthermore, Pharaoh seems to show more morality in this situation with Abram since the text seems to indicate that had Pharaoh known it was Abram’s wife, he would not have taken her into his harem.
JM believes that Gen 13:9 seems to indicate that Abram was trying to restore his reputation among his family and servants after the blunder he made in Ch. 12.
Abram had his own private “militia” of sorts according to the text; however, he refused to take any rewards above and beyond what anyone else got since he did not want anyone to take credit for what God had done or was about to do.
