Bible 365-Day 8-Evening

Gen 18-19

Tonight's selection covers the promise of the birth of Isaac and the doom of Sodom.  Here are some interesting notes:

When God promises Abraham and Sarah a son, Abraham and Sarah still question how this is possible; God retorts with the rhetorical inquiry "Is anything too difficult for the Lord?"

God reveals to Abraham the coming judgment of Sodom because of Abraham's position in God's plan.  Abraham knows God is holy and he is also aware that Lot is in Sodom, so he pleads with God to spare the city if but 10 holy people can be found.

When the two angels come to visit Sodom, Lot pleads with them to stay with him because he knows how perverse the city is and knows if they do stay in the city square as they wish, they will be most likely raped.

It is interesting to note the conflicted soul within Lot himself.  On one hand he desires to protect his two visitors, but on the other hand he is more than willing to appease the mob of hyper sexually depraved men with his own virgin daughters.  He tells them not to act wickedly, but then offers his daughters up to them; it is clear that living in Sodom amongst all the depravity has worn down the conscience and soul of Lot and his daughters.

Lot attempts to save his future son-in-laws from destruction, but they think he is joking when he tells them of the pending judgment.

As aforementioned, Lot's daughters are clearly depraved and misguided due to living in the wicked city of Sodom.  The older of the two comes up with a plan to get their father drunk and have sex with him in order to get pregnant.  She also convinces the younger daughter to do it as well, and she also gets pregnant.  They both have sons, and the offspring of those two sons would become Israel's longstanding enemies.
