Bible 365-Day 22-Evening

Genesis 49-50

So, does your “goodnight” routine in any way resemble Mr. Bean’s?  (click for video) I hope not!  Before you venture into the world of la-la land, take a trip back to days of old and read God’s word with me.  Today’s reading covers the end of Israel’s (Jacob’s) life and thusly the end of Genesis.  Here are some brief notes:

Gen 49 tells of Israel’s (Jacob’s) blessings to his children.  Here are some famous Bible folk from each tribe:

  1. Ruben: none (different than none mentioned, JM notes that Ruben’s tribe had no notable people from his tribe mentioned in the word of God due to his sin of sleeping with his father’s concubine)
  2. Simeon: none mentioned by JM at this time
  3. Levi: JM mentions that this is the line of priests to come
  4. Judah: The most famous line which of course Jesus descended from
  5. Zebulun: None mentioned at this time
  6. Issachar: None mentioned at this time
  7. Dan: Many Judges descended from Dan, however Dan’s tribe is omitted from the list in Rev 7:4-8
  8. Gad: None mentioned at this time.
  9. Asher: None mentioned at this time
  10. Naphtali: Deborah and Barak
  11. Ephraim (son of Joseph): Samuel
  12. Manasseh: (son of Joseph): Gideon
  13. Benjamin: Saul (the predecessor of King David) and Saul (later known as the Apostle Paul)

“But…But…Mr. Derek, why are there 13 tribes listed, huh, huh, huh?”   Yes, I know, most of us are familiar with the “twelve tribes” but actually there were thirteen.  It is a complex issue that I simply cannot cover right now; however, I encourage you to research more into it via the internet

Gen 50 records the death and burial of Israel.  Congratulations of finishing the book of Genesis!
