The sun sets, and so we turn our eyes to the ancient Hebrew text we call the Old Testament. Today's reading presents Jacob's deception, the stolen blessing (27), the sending away of Jacob and his dream (28) Here are some points of interest:
An interesting point to ponder in this reading is how Jacob and Rebekah's deception started with one lie, which then itself needed another lie to survive, etc... Isaac gave Jacob plenty of opportunities to come clean and tell him the truth; instead he chose to go along with the deception. This had both immediate and future consequences on Jacob's life:
- He had to flee his home to escape his older brother's rage
- He never saw his mother again
- He himself (Jacob) was deceived by his Uncle later on
- He struggled with family issues of his own
On a personal note, this once again emphasizes the point that sin will take you further than you ever wanted to go and keep you there longer than you ever intended.
