Bible 365-Day 14-Morning

Matthew Ch. 9:14-38

Grab a hot espresso or latte and journey with me through the New Testament. Today's reading covers why the disciples were not fasting along with the need for "workers" to "harvest the field"; furthermore, it records Jesus performing a plethora of miracles including:
  • Bringing a young girl back to life
  • Giving sight to a blind man
  • Casting a demon out of a mute man, thus restoring his speech

Here are some points I found interesting:

In v 34, the Pharisees say that Christ's power to cast out demons is given to him by the rule of the demons; this demonstrates a willful and intentional self-deception on their part. They had seen enough miracles preformed by Jesus to know He was of God; however, His teachings were a threat to their power over the people so they had to come up with something in order to rid the land of Him.

You can read more on self-deception from this article written by
Dr. Greg Bahnsen <— (this links to a 14 part YouTube debate between Dr. Greg Bahnsen and Dr. Stein on the topic “Does God exist?”)

The reason Christ has been continually telling those He heals to keep quiet is because He didn't want throngs of people to use Him as a "vending machine" to fix their immediate physical needs. Christ's desire was that they would heed His words and follow His teachings since the aforementioned would heal something far more valuable: their souls. Christ's words in vv 37 and 38 ring just as true today as they did when He first spoke them.
