Ch. 6-Pornaholic

Addiction:
-noun:  the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming, as narcotics, to such an extent that its cessation causes severe trauma (emphasis added)

The above link and definition are taken from Dictionary.com.  Just as any other drug can swiftly and silently take control of our lives, so can pornography.  I have seen men I knew loose contact with friends and family so they can have more time to surf the web for porn.

Men like Michael  Leahy who lost it all due to what he calls “The Crack/Cocaine of Sexual Addiction: The Internet.” Leahy is a respected author and also does debates with Ron Jeremy across the U.S.  Check out his book “Porn Nation”.  (There is also a Student Edition).

As I stated in Ch.1-“It’s Just Sex”, studies have shown that porn is more than just consumption by the eyes and ears, it is a chemical experience.  As with any addiction there is only hope for recovery if you admit you are indeed addicted.

Let me also speak to those who may not be addicted but be in contact with someone who is.  Are you fostering an environment where your closest friends and family feel they can confide in you without fear of judgment?  Porn survives, nay, thrives on starting and remaining secret.

The anonymity and affordability offered by the internet has conjured up an entirely new set of addicts.  This article from a 2001 edition of Christianity Today states that 33% of clergy and 36% of laity state they have visited a pornographic website.  Now, I believe, just like other addictions, these numbers are conservative to say the least.

What is more troubling is the clergy and laity numbers are virtually identical.  That means just as many pastors and deacons visit porn websites as do their flock.  Yet, when is the last time you heard of churches offering professional and pastoral counseling specifically geared towards porn addiction?

Most churches offer marital counseling, alcohol and drug addiction counseling, pregnancy counseling, etc… all of which are terrific , but we also need to bring this issue of porn from darkness to light.  We need to be addressing the radical and very real dangers that face both the individual and society as a whole when it comes to the issue of pornography.

If you yourself are struggling with an addiction to pornography, I will be compiling a list of resources that can assist you in overcoming your weakness, but they are only tools.  You will need prayer, scripture and most of all an accountability partner to whom you can speak openly regarding this addiction.

Ch. 7 will be some personal testimonies from both addicts as well as models who were in the industry.

WIRED WEEKEND-1

This post marks the start of a new series on my blog "Wired Weekends" in which I will discuss computing, technology, and other interesting tid-bits I pick up in the field of electronics

Greetings, fellow fans of dilatory discourse.  For the maiden voyage of “Wired Weekend” I want to concentrate on browsing the internet (You know that thing Al Gore invented-Video).

If you are reading this, chances are you are doing it through either Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. (perhaps a few of you are even using Google Chrome or Opera or even Safari as well).  While I don’t want to leave any of you out, I am a Firefox user; therefore, I will be concentrating on it today.

Mozilla Firefox, in my opinion, is a great browser; it allows you to add custom plug-ins to both enhance and protect your browsing experience.  Since my current daily series is on porn, I wanted to focus on a few plug-ins that can help you avoid unwanted images and videos on your screen.

“AdBlock Plus” is a great plug-in to help you avoid unwanted images; not only does it allow you to automatically block advertisements on websites, it also allows you to block all images of a domain or sub-domain. (Screenshot)  Let’s get practical:

During my research, one of the websites I frequented was “Adult Video News: Industry Business”. (caution-explicit)  Before I went, however, I opened up my handy-dandy AdBlock Plus filter and added the following  “http://www.avn.com-Block All Images”.  That way, no dirty pictures showed up on my screen. Yay!

Another handy tool to have is one called NoScript.  NoScript allows you to control what scripts are allowed to run when you visit a webpage. (Screenshot)  Let’s take the pragmatic path:

Using the aforementioned example, if I visit the AVN website without NoScript, a video will begin playing because the website used a “script” to tell your browser to play the video; however, if I do have NoScript, I have to give the website permission to start the video before it plays.

The final plug-in that I want to mention today is ProCon.  ProCon (sometimes called ProCon Latee)  is a filter that can block or filter out explicit content.  It has several filters, including a profanity filter.  It also allows you to put in a personalized message for the content filter.  You can check it out, it is a pretty good tool.

I hope these tools help you delete some of the frustration out of your browsing experience. Please note that the aforementioned tools also block out more than just porn, including annoying-ads, spyware, script viruses and more.  Imagine browsing MySpace or Facebook with no ads.

Well, that wraps up this edition of “Wired Weekend”, Monday and Tuesday I will wrap my series on pornography.  See you then.

Ch 5. Supply and Demand

Which came first the supply or the demand?  Who holds more culpability, producers/distributors or consumers?  That is the question we will examine in this post.

It is truly impossible to know how much money the porn industry generates per year; however, even the most conservative of estimates puts it in the billions. If you read my post “Done That” I discussed the average rate of a female porn star per scene is anywhere between $400-$2000 depending on what the scene calls for, her star power, and other varying factors.

It is without a doubt a very small piece of the porn pie.  So who is pocketing all this cash?  Producers, Distributors and owners of websites make the majority of the money;  even after overhead they make more than enough cash to live comfortably: larger adult film companies, such as Vivid, Evil Angel, and others make millions of dollars a year off of their product.

There is only one reason they make money; someone is buying their product.  Let us reinvent what a purchase is in order to solidify a point.  Next time you buy something, whether it be porn or pizza, think of it as a letter of affirmation to the company.

You know how when something goes wrong you write the company a complaint letter right?  So, when you purchase a product, you are essentially doing the opposite.  (specifically referring to repeat purchases, not first timers)

So, if an actress comes out and says that she was pressured, coerced, degraded, abused or in any other way mistreated while making a porn movie and you still choose to buy or view said movie, what are you telling the production companies?  It is ok to mistreat your talent, I will still buy your product.

Also, don’t be fooled into thinking that if you only watch the free stuff online you are not supporting the industry.  Porn companies make a ton of money off of referral and advertising programs.  Every mouse-click is more money in their pocket.

The point is, if it makes money, it will be made.  As long as you keep clicking those websites and keep buying up those DVD’s, there will be a supply to meet your demand.  And as your porn addiction waxes, the producers have but one choice and that is to keep up with your demand.

Chapter 6 discusses ways to help you see the signs of porn addiction and how to seek help if you are a “Pornaholic”

I leave you with a quote from Jack Johnson’s  “Cookie Jar”

“It was you, it was me, it was every man; We’ve all got the blood on our hands.  We only receive what we demand and if we want Hell then Hell’s what will have”

Ch 4. Done That

Expectations and Reality are rarely synonymous, especially when dealing with something we have no or very little inside knowledge of.  The following post is explicit, but is designed to inform and educate, not to shock.  If you are easily offended, do not read this post.  Consider yourself warned!

-------Explicit---------

So, remember back in Chapter 2 how I said the most outrageous, yet the most common genre was extreme.  That is the main focal point of this post.  As I stated in my cold intro, this post is not designed to simply shock you. (although it may do so).  Its purpose is two fold.  One, to educate you, my reader, on just how far porn has gone.  Two, to dispel the ridiculous notion that some have that porn should be viewed by couples to assist them in their sex life.  Although there are educational videos out there they are by leaps and bounds the minority.

My research was conducted in the following way:  I used keyword searches on Google and Bing.com (extreme porn, fetish porn, bondage, group sex, etc…) and noted how many results I got.  I also chatted with several current and former adult film actresses who have filmed extreme scenes (via myspace, adult forums, twitter, etc..).  I am not going to write this as if it were an APA research paper, instead I will utilize a loose narrative style, after all this is a blog.

If you are really interested in figures and facts, you can email me.  Also, I did take precautions to protect myself from viewing actual porn by using a Firefox extension called “Adblock Plus” which blocked all the pictures and “NoScript” which blocked any movies.

When a female first enters the world of porn, she understands she will be naked, having sex on camera.  What she usually doesn’t know is the type of sex she will be forced to have in order to survive and make money is not normally the type of sex she has with her boyfriend or husband.  A scene usually lasts between 12-40 minutes and takes anywhere from 1-8 hours to film.  Most actresses have never experienced the following before entering the porn world:

  • A “Gagger”
    • A scene that involves a male actor repeatedly thrusting himself down a woman’s throat until she gags and/or pukes.    The going rate is anywhere between $400-$1,000 dollars.
  •   A “Facial”
    • Over 65% of all pornography scenes end with what is referred to as a facial. It involves a man or several men ejaculating onto a woman’s face and eyes.  Women are not paid extra for this as it is part of the scene.
  • Group Sex
    • Self explanatory- A women has sex with 3 or more men at one time.  Rates are somewhere between $800-$1600
  • Anal Sex
    • Self explanatory.  Rates are between $700-$1400

Others items worth mentioning are the fact that a large majority of porn is focused on the degradation of women, not healthy sexual intercourse.  Women are regularly smacked, slapped, spat upon, choked, gagged, verbally abused, and otherwise objectified.

I also came across a title called “Swirlies”, and according to the description, the women in these movies have their heads shoved in a toilet during and after intercourse.

Another title “Donkey Punch” involved the man punching the woman (closed fist) in the back of the head during anal sex while he climaxed.  Actress Alex Divine reported this to be one of the worst, most traumatic movies she ever filmed.

Still another website, which I will not name, boasts of finding brand new girls who have never done a movie before and putting them through as much abuse as possible until they cry or breakdown on camera.  Going rate for models on that site is between $1500 and $2000.

When the webmaster was confronted on his abusive and predatory like behavior he basically said (using more colorful language) that the girls need the money and I explain everything that is going to happen to them, and they let me do it.

 -------End Explicit---------

I could go on and on, but I hope with the small amount I have posted that you get the point I am so vividly attempting to make.  We can all agree that what is portrayed on screen is not the least bit normal.  The average woman barely lasts a year in porn due to the extreme acts she is forced to perform.  I did not even touch the fact that most actresses also suffer from STD’s as well as other physical problems due to these shoots, but they do.

Another fact to note is that what you see on camera is a highly edited version of what happened.  Every actress I chatted with said that the intercourse is never straight flowing.  They will have sex for 3-4 minutes, then pause, then break, then make up, then sex for a few more minutes, etc…  They are not happy, they are not having a good time.  It is not normal or natural.

In the next post I will talk about how consumers drive this industry and ultimately assist the producers and directors in their mistreatment and abuse of these models.

Ch 3.-Been There

No one likes it, but sometimes we all have to learn the hard way.  These women broke through the bondage of porn to find the road to freedom.

We have all done something we regret, said something we didn’t mean, bought something we shouldn’t have or perhaps kissed someone we wished we wouldn’t have.  Former porn models are no different.  Due to a plethora of circumstances within and/or beyond their control, they chose to pose nude and/or have sex in front of a camera for all the world to see.  Here are some of their stories, some of these are text blogs, others are videos, and some are both.

Justine's Story Justine played the character of “Dawson” an 18 year old college student doing a solo website (see Ch.2 for definition of solo).  Once she shot all the content for the site, she had immediate regrets and asked the producers/webmasters not to publish it.  They did anyway, 1 year later.  They released all the content as if it were “fresh” and even did the diary/blog pretending to be her.  They also created facebook and myspace accounts in the name of “Dawson” using Justine’s face and likness.  So, even though she is out of the porn world, she is still in.  Hence the name of her blog “Outsidebutinporn.com.  Check it out.  You can also email her at OutsideButInPorn@gmail.com

Katrice's Story- Katrice was known in the porn industry as “Nadia Styles”.  See her video of how she got in and why she got out.

Julie’s Story-  Julie was known in the porn industry as “Sierra Sinn”.  See her video testimony of her time in porn and how she was able to get out and begin to lead a normal life.

Tammie’s Story-  Tammie was known in the porn industry as “Tamra Toryn”.  Her video testimony is a little more graphic than the previous three, but still she exposes the truth about how she was treated while in the industry.

Tanya’s Story-  Tanya was known in the porn industry as “Jersey Jaxin”.  Her written/audio testimony is also a little more graphic than the first three, but it exposes a needed truth about how she was treated while in the industry.

There are many more stories like the one’s above, but for now, these will do.  All of these lovely women have one thing in common, they are on the road to freedom, thanks to two things: One, Christ’s death on the cross and two, someone helped them find the road.

Ch 2.-Models-Objects or Humans

So, seems a bit daft to be discussing something so axiomatic, right? We all know of course that adult film actresses are indeed human. True, but this post will focus more on perception and treatment, not actualities.

In order to truly examine this world we call pornography, we must dissect it. Although there are hundreds of niches within porn, if we were to give it a rough chop, we would find 4 main “Kingdoms” “Solo, Softcore, Hardcore, and Extreme”. Each one of these has a Phylum, Class, etc… but for now, let us stick with these four. Now, we must define each one so we know what they mean for those not versed in the porn lingo.

-------EXPLICT---------

Solo
Any movie or print that involves a solo nude or semi-nude model. She (this series will focus on straight porn, hence "She") does not participate in any penetrable sexual activities
Softcore
Model is nude or semi-nude and may participate in sexual activity, but penetration is not shown to the viewer, only implied
Hardcore
Model is nude or semi-nude. Penetration and/or ejaculation is shown. The sex may be slightly aggressive or soft, but nothing too far out of the ordinary is portrayed
Extreme
Model is nude or semi-nude. Anything goes. Group Sex, extreme oral sex (aka "Deepthroats or Gaggers"), anal sex, bondage, verbal and physical abuse, eroticized urination, etc... This genre is far outside the bounds of what most people consider normal, yet it is the most common style of porn made on the internet today.

No matter what the genre, most models have one thread in common, they need money fast. Most webmasters/producers/photogs also have one thing in common, they need money. Porn, like most everything else American, is a consumer driven business that is all about the green. The problem is, when human beings become the “product” people tend to loose sight of their soul and humanity.

There are many testimonies of former models and talent online, Shelly Lubben, XXX Church, Dawson Miller aka Justine, you can check these out at your leisure. One thing that most former models say is “It was all an act, I wasn’t having a good time at all. Having a bunch of men degrade you on camera is something you never fully get over” They speak of how they felt worthless, used, and cheap.

Now, before I absolve them of all responsibility, yes, it was their choice to get into porn. They know this and they have to live with the consequences everyday.

One former model who went by the name Sierra Sinn spoke of how she would not be able to look in the mirror after doing a hardcore shoot because she would burst into tears. Another solo model said after she came home from doing her shoot she held her head in her hands and cried at the thought of what she had done. Next chapter “Been there” will focus mainly on former models in the industry while “Done That” will focus on things that current and former models were forced to do during their career.

The point I am making is this, you cannot fully separate sex from morality. You will either live with guilt or be forced to lie to yourself enough times until you believe it. We were created to make love, and sex and sexuality are only a part of the equation. Subtracting love and morality cause an unhealthy balance that can take years to repair. Models in this industry are indeed human, and when they try to sell themselves as objects, everyone gets hurt in the long run.

Porn-Chapter 1- “It’s just sex”

"What's the big deal, it's just sex? I would rather my kids watch two people make love than send them off to war like you"

So, what is the big deal about pornography? After all, it is just sex, right? Sex is a natural, normal, God created (not too mention incredibly fun) activity, right? So, why make such a big fuss over it? Well, there are a few reasons why we, as a society, need to keep an eye on this industry, because they are selling a whole lot more than just sex. Please note I am not, nor will I ever, advocate the complete censorship of pornography. I am, however, all for pointing out the truth regarding this industry.

Firstly, they aren’t selling sex, they are selling a drug. No, I didn’t mistype anything, pornographers are drug dealers and consumers are the junkies. There have been numerous studies done ( http://bit.ly/QCFUp this being the abstract of one ) that show when a subject views pornography their brain releases chemicals (dopamine for instance) into their body causing a temporal euphoric feeling. Couple this euphoric feeling with the natural physical pleasures associated with masturbation and orgasm and you have a high comparable with that of cocaine.

Secondly, just like drugs, eventually your body will begin to get used to this feeling and need more to satisfy itself. You will need more porn, more often and more extreme content to keep up with your desires. Print porn will no longer satisfy you, now you will need solo girls on video. Then onto softcore, hardcore, and extreme content to keep up with your joneses. You begin delving into areas that are way outside the bounds of normalcy. Now granted, there will always be a group of people who consider anything normal, but that doesn’t change the fact that there is a healthy view of sexuality and an unhealthy view of sexuality. I will delve more into that in Chapter 2- “Models-Humans or Objects”?

Finally, the so-called “just sex” displayed on the computer monitors of the average porn consumer is not the type of sex that most couples participate in. It is a distorted to say the least. Again, this will be delved into in the next post.

Be advised, the next chapter will be very explicit.

Porn Prologue

I am of the opinion that one of the true rubrics of a culture is how they chose to entertain themselves. Pornography is a multi-billion dollar industry that continues to thrive each and every year.

My next few posts will concentrate on this industry and its effects on both society and the individual. I will attempt to offer both secular and Christian reasons as to why this material is dangerous to the mental health and overall sexual well being of the consumer. Also I will offer up some current perspectives from those who were in or are still in the industry. As always for those who are looking for assistance in abolishing this addiction in their own lives, I will present you with sources that can help you.

Although I in no way intended to offend the good senses of my readers, this is a topic I feel very strongly about and I will be explicit in some of my posts, especially when offering up prospective of those in the industry. If this sort of conversation does offend your good senses, then by all means don't read it. I will post the words "EXPLICT" and "END EXPLICT" respectively if you wish to skip these sections
