Mirror Madness-part 1

*Adapted from a sermon entitled “How to overcome inferiority and low self-esteem” from the series “Breaking Through Life’s Biggest Barriers

It has been observed that most human beings cannot walk by a mirror without looking at themselves.  It has further been observed that if someone shares a photograph with you and you are in the picture…the first person you observe is yourself.

Many of us have at one point been in a funhouse and looked at ourselves through the wacky mirrors contained within its doors.  The truth is, however, that our own self image has been distorted just like a funhouse mirror by false worldly teachings; consequently, most people are observing their life unknowingly through a distorted fun house style lens.

Three of the biggest mirrors that distort our image are as follows:

  1. The “Appearance” Mirror:  Our value is based upon how good we look.

  2. The “Performance” Mirror: Our value is based upon on how well we perform.

  3. The “Status” Mirror: Our value is based upon how others view me.

The problem with the above mirrors is that they are grave distortions of the true, original image; furthermore, they will always leave you feeling inferior and longing for true acceptance. The Bible teaches us that God views us very differently…and that the real reason we are significant is because:

  1. We are Unique:  Genesis 1:27, Psalm 139:13-14

  2. We are Loved: 1 Samuel 16:7, Jeremiah 31:3

  3. We are Valuable: 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

  4. We are Secure: Ephesians 1:13

  5. We are Indispensible: Ephesians 2:10, Ephesians 4:15-16
