Around the Web in 80 days-Down Right Now

“Why is it taking Facebook so long to load?”

So is it just your computer or is your favorite website not working? Here is a way to find out:

What Is “DownRightNow?”

DownRightNow (DRN) is a website that keeps track of some of the most popular websites on the internet and lets users know if their favorite website is really down or if it is just their computer.  It does this through a combination of monitoring both official and unofficial channels.

Why Should I Care?

If you are a frequent user of such websites as Google, Facebook, Hotmail, Twitter, etc… then this website can really help you out.

If for some reason you can’t update your Twitter or your Facebook mobile photos aren’t getting published, it helps to know if it something on your end (client side) or their end (server side).

How Does It Work?

DRN relies on both official and unofficial channels as aforementioned.  It monitors the official twitters and other outlets of the sites and DRN also accepts user feedback as well.  So, if 100,000 users all make a claim that Facebook is down, it is highly probable the issue is on the server side.

DRN does up to the minute monitoring of their selected sites and keeps the user informed of the sites’ status.  It also graphs out how often and for how long the sites have been down in the past 24 hours.

How Many Sites Does It Monitor?

Thus far, DRN monitors nine major sites in three categories:

  • Blogger, LiveJournal, TypePad (Blogs)
  • GMAIL, Hotmail, Yahoo Mail (Mail)
  • Facebook, Ning, Twitter (Social Networks)

Are You This Nerdy In Real Life?

Yep.

In Conclusion

DRN is an excellent tool to have in your web arsenal.  It will help you diagnose problems by letting you know whether the problem is yours or theirs so to speak.  I recommend bookmarking it for future use.  They also have a blog and Twitter account as well.

Until Next Time…
