Matthew 8:1-22
Good morning, today’s reading covers the cleansing of the leper, the healing of the centurion’s servant, the healing of Peter’s mother-in-law and the demands of discipleship. Here are some points to ponder:
The Leper had no doubt about Jesus’ ability to heal, only His will. The same goes for the centurion, who noted that although he commands many men, his roof was not worthy for Jesus to stay under. Jesus was so impressed with his faith that he healed his servant instantly just by speaking.
JM notes the phrase “Let me bury my father” used in v. 21 was a euphemism. The man’s father may or may not have actually been dead, instead it may have meant “let me wait until my father is dead so I can collect my inheritance”; this makes Jesus' next statement “Follow me and allow the dead to bury their own dead” a little easier to understand, which can be understood “Let the spiritually dead worry about such matters”
