*Update* I found a Java Version of this program that works on Unix, Mac OS and Windows. It has more features, including my favorite bottom margins (that is it will only go halfway down the page to save you neck strain) Check out JDarkRoom here. It installs to your computer, unlike the Regular DarkRoom program which uses the .Net Framework (it doesn’t actually install anything to your computer, so it doesn’t mess with your program files, registry, or anything like that.)
Today I want to let you know about a program called "DarkRoom". Now despite it's title, it is actually a text program, not a photo editing program. DarkRoom is Window's OpenSource answer to the popular mac program WriteRoom. Now I have never owned nor used a mac so I cannot speak for WriteRoom, but I am using Darkroom to write this very post. Darkroom is a minimal text editing program that when opened turns your whole computer screen black with the exception of a green blinking cursor.
Its stated purpose is to give you a "distraction free" writing environment so that you aren't worried about your email or your iTunes or Facebook or MySpace, etc... It is simply you and the text. I also enjoy the green text on a black background. I find it is much easier on the eyes than the standard white on black. Obviously the drawbacks to using this type of software are: no spell check, no fancy fonts and no formatting. To be fair, all of that could be considered "editing" and this is simply a text processing program; so you can write what you need to write and add the bells and whistles later. I have included a screenshot below of this very post pre-edit in DarkRoom. (Click the picture below to enlarge it)
So, check it out, see if it helps bring out the Stephen King in you.
P.S. Ctrl+S saves your document and the escape (Esc) key takes you out of full screen mode. (Since there is no file menu)
