We wink at gluttony but picket the homosexuals...? Why
God Hates Fags...Pass the butter
Awhile back I typed up a post about how we as Christians tend to get caught up in what I call "Banner Issues". These issues typically reflect the current Republican talking points and are pseudo-biblical at best. In our time the banner issue is homosexuality. I am writing about it again because recently Craig Gross of XXX Church recently penned a phenomenal article for CNN regarding our fascination with homosexuality.Sin is Sin
In his article he points out that the average Christian would look at a 300lb pastor, believe he has no sin problem, and that he's heading straight for heaven. That very same group would look at a man who struggles with same-sex attraction and condemn him straight to hell. They would also more than likely avoid him, and treat him with utter disdain. Why? Is not gluttony is a sin? How about Gossip, Slander, Hate, Lust, And yet most Christians wink at the aforementioned sins but burn with rage at the "homosexual agenda".The Sin Problem
It has always been my belief that our job as Christians is to tell the good news, aka, the gospel. Yes, part of the gospel is confronting the lost with the problem of sin, but nowhere are we urged to take on the burden of taking away that sin before we show love. We are to show love at all times to all people, even our enemies, those who persecute us, and those who treat us unfairly. As Craig states in his articleThe goal shouldn’t be to change any one's sexuality. Ultimately, I believe homosexuality gets blown way out of proportion in our churches. If we would all see gays as fellow sinners instead of “others,” there wouldn't be a need for gay outreach, because they would already be incorporated into our community based on a shared need for Christ. God loves gays and Jesus is for them. God loves the fat preacher. Homosexual activity and overeating are both sins – just like speeding, gossip, lying and cheating. I think I did all of those just today.
