We say we are thankful but to whom are we thankful and for what do we give thanks? As Thanksgiving arrives we must give more than just a passing glance to such deep questions.
The following is adapted from a sermon written by Dr. John Greene and delivered by same at Harmony Hill Baptist Church in Lufkin, TX on Sunday, November 22nd, 2009.
Many times we look at the television or listen to the radio and hear people proclaim the many things for which they are thankful; family, friends, jobs, love and food usually top the list. But listen close and you will notice something conspicuously absent from these declarations of gratitude; To whom are they directing their thanks?
Is it random chance that has brought about such fortune and happiness? Or is it something, nay, Someone who has been so good. James 1:17 tells us plainly that it is God to whom we should be giving thanks for all we have and all good that is yet to come.
It is also important to note that Philippians 4:6 tells us that all true praying should include thanksgiving. We are to live our lives giving thanks to the Father for all he has done and to show those around us that even in darkness we will give thanks to the one true God.
The truth is, however, that we are more upset about what God hasn’t given us whilst simultaneously God is grieved we aren’t truly grateful for much of what He has given. Consider the time when Jesus healed ten leapers and only one came back to give thanks.
Remember, that a heart of thanks will manifest itself in every aspect of your life which will in turn show the love and light of Christ to all those around us. And when the darkness and tough times seem never-ending, remember the promise given in Nahum 1:12, there is a limit to our trouble and affliction.
